The Black Equity Movement
The Black Equity Movement (BEM) Program was formed in 2020 in response to the fatal acts of police brutality against George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, two of many Black people killed by police across the country. The COVID pandemic also plainly revealed a truth Black communities already knew -- systemic inequities exist and have harmful generational effects. The goal of BEM is to confront and address the inequities experienced by Black Oregonians.
